Yuru Camp, and the power of anime (camping post)

Yuru Camp was, in my opinion, the best Moe anime since K-On! It's a classic cute girls do cute things, in their school club thing, but it's a very good one.

First the characters are really interesting, and cute. The show is really funny, and cute. But most importantly, it's really informative, and cute!

This post is not a review of Yuru Camp, but a talk about the power of anime, and in this case, the selling power of anime.
As you all know, I live in japan now, so I can see first hand how Yuru Camp has affected people here, but I can't say how it affected people outside of japan, so this post is only about Japan. I also have no numbers to base this on, this is all speculations from what I personally observed, from people directly, or on twitter from many Otaku groups, as well as from asking people in Yamanashi directly (and also some from other people asking, in other blog/reddit posts).

Very often, anime have at least 1 product that they put forward in one way or another, you can think about Lucky Star and the Choco Cornet, Shakugan no Shana and the Melonpan, Naruto and the ramen, this can also be an activity, like Amanchu and diving, K-On! and music, and of course, Yuru Camp and camping. Sometimes these are chosen randomly, just as a thing to help identify with the character, but sometime they are made specifically as promotion for the item/activity, and this is the case with Yuru Camp. But in Yuru Camp's case, the product isn't camping, it's the Yamanashi prefecture. Yuru Camp is a Yamanashi prefecture advertisement, and it's the best advertisement ever. When created, the Yamanashi residents were asked by the tourism board to scout for locations and places of interest, to show the beauty of the prefecture.
The tourism board even has a special website and a map up for people who want to visit all the locations from the anime.

This advertisement worked, a lot. The only numbers I have are from the lake Shimarin and Nadeshiko meet at in the first episode, their visitors tripled because of the anime.
On twitter you can see Otakus from everywhere going to camp for the first time, and obviously the location of choice is the Yamanashi prefecture. Groups of Otaku from Oarai (mainly GuP fans) were seen posting on twitter pictures of themselves with brand new camping gear, camping in Yamanashi, eating at the restaurants in the prefecture, and eating the manjuu from the anime. Same things from the Washinomiya fans(lucky star fans). This anime reached a lot of Otaku, it's super popular, it got people into camping, and since camping is the perfect activity for moving to another prefecture, it got people to go to Yamanashi and spend money there.

Of course, myself being an Otaku with absolutely 0 will power, I bought for about 1000$ in camping gear, and started camping because of Yuru Camp. And of course, I did a camping trip to Yamanashi, and went around the locations of the anime. This is my blog, and this is the kind of post I do, sio here's my own report on my Yuru Camp Camping trip!

Me and a friend (who had not actually seen Yuru Camp, but I still convinced to come camp with me anyway) left from Tokyo Saturday morning, destination Fumotoppara camping site, in Yamanashi, Where Rin and Nadeshiko share a nabe in episode 2 and 3.
It's a 4 hours drive (avoiding the highway because fuck the overpriced tolls in japan) and I took my motorcycle to go there, while my friend rented a car. 4 hours on a Bike is a bit much so we planned a couple of stops along the way, first one being the Suwa shrine in Aonohara.

P6300003

It's a nice little shrine, but I wouldn't really recommend anyone to go out of their way to go see it.

Next stop we planned was at Lake Yamanaka, but we actually stopped in the middle of the Doushi Road, at a driver's rest place, filled with motorcycle. We didn't plan for this, but the Doushi Road is actually a famous scenic view that is really fun to ride trough on bike, with lots of nice turns and a super cool view. There was a lot of people on motorcycles there, was pretty cool. I actually filmed parts of my ride, it's a pretty long video, you can just skim trough it to check if there's anything you'd like to see. Lots of interesting sceneries, the Doushi  Road part starts at 15:14.

Next stop was at Lake Yamanaka, unfortunately there were clouds over Mt. Fuji, but the view was still really nice.

P6300054
Next stop was in a Houtou restorant. Houtou is the meal that Ogaki prepares to Nadeshico and her family when Nadeshiko is sick. It's a Yamanashi specialty. The shop I went to had bear Houtou, so I tried this. It was delicious!

P6300066

Finally the next and last stop of the day was Fumotoppara's camping ground.  Once we got there, it had been raining a bit, so the camp was pretty soggy, and there were clouds all the time we were there preventing us from seeing the Mt. Fuji. It was still a pretty nice camp, super big, toilets are nice, clean, and in relative proximity of everyone. Running water near every camp spaces. There's nothing really to see except for Mt. Fuji there though, so nothing much to visit.

P6300095

Because my friend was camping for the first time, he had no camping gear, he planned to rent it at the camp, but all their rental items were already handed out. So we had to getho camp, and he slept in his car, we also had to do a weird setup with a picnic tarp to cover the rain, but it was still really relaxing and a lot of fun.

P6300102
We ended up making some curry while watching Yuru Camp on my tablet.

On the morning of the next day, my friend had to go back to Tokyo because he had to bring back the rental car. So I stayed in Yamanashi and did a visit of a couple of the locations from the anime. I used the map provided by the Yamanashi Tourism Board on the website I linked to before. The map also has other interesting points of the region like restaurants and onsens. I met a lot of other people doing the pilgrimage while going around too. was pretty cool.

First stop was Utsubuna station, the station that Nadeshiko uses to commute to school.

P7010120

Around the station was a super good yakisoba restaurant (recommended on the map) which was also super cheap!
Next stop was the Manjuu shop where Nadeshio, Ogaki and Aoi go after going to an outdoor shop (the outdoor shop itself doesn't have a real model from what I understand).

P7010138
P7010123
The manjuu was delicious, and the staff at the shop was super nice. went to the bench where the girl ate their manjuu too, but it was too hot so I just ate mine inside the shop haha.

P7010134

Next stop was The supermarket where Aoi works, next to the Liquor store where Ogaki works. The liquor store seemed like there was no store in the building, but the supermarket was as in the anime.

P7010140

Next stop was the School used as the model for the School the girls go to in the anime. I went from memory on which spot to take pictures of, and I didn't go pass the gate. Apparently the school is closed now, so I should have went inside maybe...

P7010149
P7010158
P7010163
The last stop of this trip was the first camp in episode 1, where Nadeshiko and Rin meet for the first time. I couldn't go on the beatch itself since there was some kind of event and I wasn't there to camp. I'll be sure to go camp there next time. They still let me on the camp site after I asked nicely and was able to get some nice pics of the place, and the most important part, I saw the toilet stall when Rin first saw Nadeshiko sleeping in the middle of the day!

P7010182
P7010185
That concludes my first, but certainly not last, trip to Yamanashii. Next time It'll probably be for winter camping!

Akiba Report 2018/03/21

Today is the first day of Spring... or it should be? Why is there snow in Tokyo in Spring?

P3210047
Won't stop me from going to Akihabara today though! I was too tired to go Monday but I have to go today... so I went! And today was one of those days... where I had 0 self control. I bought way too much stuff...
Started by going to eat at Henry's Burger. Their burgers are the best in Tokyo, and  probably Japan. So now I can't really go to Akiba without going there.

LRM_20180321_142719
After eating I went to do some shopping for a computer part, needed a sATA power splitter for the SSD I bough yesterday... Took care of this quickly, then went to Traders to buy Senran Kagura Burst on 3DS. I bought 2 spinoff Senran Kagura games before, Shinobi Refle on Switch and Peach Beach Splash on Steam, and it really made me want to play the actual games from the series. The fist one is only on 3DS (there's a new PS4 version out now actually, but I don't have a PS4) so I went and got that. I'll be able to get the other ones on PC. Before going to where I was planning to go next, I made a detour via Liberty to see if they had any cool new items, turns out they had 2 life size wall scroll of Mayushii and Kurisu... so I bought that. The quality isn't great but the art is nice, and it was cheap.

P3210066
After that I had 3 museum/exhibition/special event to visit. The first one was at Atre, near the JR Akihabara Station. It was a Saekano exhibition. Was really nice. Some pictures took a lot of time to take because people kept walking in front. Stuff they sold was in the 1000 of dollars so I didn't buy anything.

Before going to the next one I went to K-books in Radio Kaikan. Bought a couple of glass I had not seen before... one that was way too expensive, but it's probably the glass I wanted the most of any glass I've ever seen, so I went ahead a bought that... It's a Shinobu Glass with a rubber coaster, you ca see it in this loot picture

P3210060
After that I went to the Compile heart event at Gamers, on the same floor, before reaching the Compile heart place, there were 2 small museums

LRM_20180321_162711

LRM_20180321_162543
And then I reached the Compile heart section...

LRM_20180321_162757
LRM_20180321_162806
LRM_20180321_162849
I had already spent a lot before reaching this place, but I completely gave out and bought for like 30000 yen of stuff..... It's a good thing I already had some of the Wallscrolls there and the shirts don't fit me, or I would be completely broke right now. After this I left immediately the store, skipping the other exhibition I was supposed to see, and ran home. Spending any more time in Akiba at this point would have been dangerous for my wallet lol.

Pioneer SE-MHR5 Review

It's been a while since my last Headphones review. I got a couple other pairs since the Axent Wear review of 2 years ago, but none of them were good enough to warrant a review.

Little bit of story time before going to the actual review.
I've had my AKG K-271 Studio for 8 year and a half now. I've changed the cable twice, and the pads recently. They are still sounding great, but I'm afraid that they might die at any moment. And with the model not existing anymore, and the Mark II not getting reviews as good as the original, I've been trying to find something else to replace them. I'm getting worried that I'll never find anything... but I'll keep looking!
So with this mindset, I went to the Angler fish Festival (a festival in Oarai, that's heavily Girls Und Panzer based) and Onkyo was demoing their new Girls Und Panzer Collaboration headphones, the SE-MHR5.
I tried the headphones there and from the short amount of time I tried them, they sounded really great. The GUP collabo version was 30000 yen, but I though they were worth it. When they made us try them, the headphones were plugged into Pioneer's XDP-300R audio player (I think, it might have been the Grand Beat too, They didn't give info about the device itself at the event.).
When i came back home I found out the non Collabo version of these headphones is 14000 yen at Bic Camera, so I bought them immediately. I'm not a big enough GUP fan to pay 160$ more for a pair of headphones.

Now the review!

The look:
The headphones look pretty normal... They are all made of plastic, and while they don't feel cheap, they also don't feel premium to the touch. The don't have an especially good look. I think the Collabo version might have actually had metal on them? But I'm not sure... Obviously the collabo version looks better because of the GUP panels, but I got the non-collabo version, so the panel is just the Pioneer logo on a black background with a vinil disk feel.

The headphones came with a nice small transport case, which is pretty nice.

As you can see on the last picture, the headphones can be folded to fit into the transport pouch. You can also maybe see on the right side, there's a second cable in the pouch, but this is not an extra cable in case your first one dies. It's a special cable for usage with Pioneer's own device, that provides "balanced output", basically the pin has 4 channels instead of 3, so each side gets 2, and there's no shared channel. As I don't have any device that can take this cable, I couldn't try it.

Comfort:
This is actually probably the most disappointing point of these headphones. When I tried them at the event, I only wore them for 5 minute so I didn't notice, but they are not comfortable for long periods of listening time.
The cups, while being bigger than the ones on the SONY mdr-zx600, are still too small to completely go over the ear, so they are still very On Ear, and not over the hear headphones, and it shows after a while, because they clamp more on your head than the Sony ones.
So far my limit has been about 2 hours, which is very low.

Now onto the important part, how do they sound?
Like last time I did the comparison with a pair of AKG K-271 Studio (~250$) and a pair of cheaper Sony mdr-zx600 for on the go music (~40$).
Once again, a disclaimer: I'm a big music fan, I love listening to music, and I'm a bit crazy about the sound, but I still don't think I qualify as an Audiophile. I love a pure sound, and I want what I listen to, to be as close as possible as what the arranger probably wanted me to ear. So this whole review will be based on that principle.
Disclaimer #2: Because I don't have the pioneer devices with the balanced output headphone plug, I may not be able to use the headphones at their maximum quality.

The test I did wasn't scientific at all, I just played 5 songs, which are pretty different from each others, all repeated a lot with the different headsets, trying to pick up the sound difference, what make each of them sound better or worse.
The songs were:

  1. fripSide - Sister's Noise
  2. EGOIST - Fallen
  3. Kimino-Museum - ラストリモート
  4. Kimino-Museum - Last Paradise
  5. Kimino-Museum - Plotted tragedy
You might notice there's a lot of Kimino-Museum songs this time, it's because I wanted to test them during the full vocal harmony that Kimino-Museum can produce, but I used the wrong song (still a very good song) so I did another one after that. The first Kimino-Museum song (same than last time) is used for a different type of sound test.

First thing, they sound a lot better than the Axent Wear sounded during that last review, so this time there's no real disappointment.
The AKG headphones, at double the price, still perform a lot better though.
The sound of the Pioneers is pretty bass heavy, just a bit heavier than the SONY ones, and this is something I failed to notice when I was at the event. The bass while being pretty loud doesn't hide other sounds too much, but it feels like the sound is a lot better on the low then than the high end of the spectrum.
During Fallen, some of the more subtle piano notes get lost a bit, hidden by the strong bass. Once again the sony strangely perform pretty bad on this song, so the Pioneer sounded better than the sony ones on this song.
The biggest problem I found with the sound of the Pioneer was with song with a lot of spacial sounds. And by this I mean songs with a lot of music sources (instruments, voices) coming from different directions in the song. With the AKG, you can pinpoint every instrument in your head, every voice, you can follow traveling sound, and you can easily concentrate on any instrument at any time and isolate it. That's where the Pioneers lost some points. Because while they aren't bad, they are not great at it either. Instruments can get lost behind the strong bass. The piano in Lost paradise was really hard to isolate with them. And high pitched sounds were a bit harder to notice compared to low sounds (like the hi-hat abuse that Tymizz does in any Kimino-museum song) sounds a bit disappointing.
So while they were better overall that the sony, the 100$ difference feels a bit hard to justify, because once again the sony did very good in all these tests. I'm still surprised at how good these 40$ headphones are...
If you're the kind of person who like bass, these headphones would be pretty good because the sound is actually good while still boosting bass.
For me they'll be a good second pair I guess, but the hunt for the AKG K-271 is not over yet.

Note: when i did my Axent Wear review 2 years ago, the Sony headphones were listed at 40$ somewhere, since I wrote that price down, but they are now listed at 90$ on amazon japan. So at this price point their quality makes more sense.

Comments

Found a way to Hack both Disqus and Google+ comments in the blog at the same time so I could move away from Google+ comments while not losing all the past comments. I really wish there was an easy way to migrate all the G+ comments, but Google made sure this wasn't possible.

It's not looking really nice, but you should now be able to choose the way you want to comment at the bottom of every posts. I'll probably try to tweak it a bit still so that both don't show by default when I have time.

Considering I'm not using G+ anymore, most everyone I know moved away from G+ and I want to exit Google's ecosystem eventually (this includes blogger) I need to phase out Google+ comments.

4 years of drawing!

Kinda late on posting this this year, as of September 6th, I have been drawing for 4 years.

This year I only did 1 doujin, for winter comiket, and I'm not participating at LuckyFes, but I did make 3 page for a collabo book to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Lucky Star anime.
Neige is finished as a series now, I''m kinda happy with it, the ending was as cute as I wished it to be.
This one also had more page and was more work overall. It was still a very fun experience, and I applied for winter comiket again. I don't know if I'll be accepted, but I'm making a Neptunia series book. This year i played Megadimension Neptunia Victory II and completely fell in love with it. I love the characters, the music, the story, and the gameplay was improved too. So I wanted to make a book about it, if I'm not accepted for winter comiket I'll try for comic1 and summer comiket.

I decided not to apply for summer comiket in order to improve my art, dunno if it really worked though since a lot of other variables happened that shaped my art this year, like the fact that I bought a Wacom MobileStudio Pro. Having this now, I'm fully diginal, skipping the paper step I used to do for the previous illustrations/doujins.

Here's "this year in drawing":

This time it's kinda easy to see improvement, but like I said I think most of it is more because of new tools/techniques than skill itself. You can see how good the last 2 Ema I did are compared to before, it's because I got tips from other Lucky star artist about how to make it so the ink doesn't get absorbed by the wood so much, so the lines are better, and they also showed me a pretty simple technique to transfer a sketch to wood, so now I do the illustration before, then transfer on wood, and finish the lines after.

As I did the previous years, I did a Poll to ask you which is your favorite illustration among the illustrations I did last year, please vote on it and leave a comment explaining your choice so I can use it to improve!
http://otakushurikn.blogspot.jp/2017/09/best-drawing-201609-to-201709.html

Best Drawing 2016/09 to 2017/09

Once again, I'm gonna ask you all to vote on your favorite among my drawings this year.

Got new tools this year which completely changed the way I drew, so this should be interesting. I used 3D models for proportion on some of these (namely the ones which look good lol)
Tried doing this to try to understand proportions more, but ended up having hard time not using it anymore.

Let me know why you choose the one you did, if you feel like it, and I'll use the comments to get better!
