I've been drawing for 12 years today. If you've been reading this blog, you know I've been struggling a lot with drawing, especially in the latest years. This year I took the resolution to draw more.... as you can expect, it didn't work, like most resolutions. Until I started drawing with a friend from Poland named Kish. Kish is an incredible artist, and we started doodling together once in a while. Just funny cute drawings, nothing serious, just to have FUN drawing. And this worked! I really had fun drawing with him, and it made me progress, slowly but surely. Here are some of the best doodles I've made while doodling with Kish.
As you can see they are all relatively simple, but there's still a visible progression in my lines and art style.
Speaking about art style, last time I did a post like this I mentioned I was trying to change my art style, and I ended up giving up on that, and just going with what feels natural. I still kept some pieces of that previous style in my current style, but it's subtle, mostly for the eyes. I don't consider my current style final either, I plan on improving and adding small details as I go.
While doodling was fun, the real thing that got me started was ArtFight 2025. I didn't know what ArtFight was before I participated this year, but someone from the Club Anime Quebec introduced it to me. Basically they put every artist in 2 teams, and you get points when you attack (draw) a character from the other team. I used this as a motivation to get drawing, and it really worked. I did 5 illustrations for ArtFight, and I especially love the 4th one.
These were done over the span of 5 weeks, and you can definitely see a progression.
I am currently working on an illustration for the 15th anniversary of the Neptunia series, but it's taking me a long time. I'm really late on it, as the anniversary was on august 19th. But I don't care, I'm taking the time it needs to make it nice. Here's what the lines looks like so far:
What's in the future?
Well for one: no more doodling with Kish, as he will be unable to do it anymore due to personal reasons. I might try to convince someone else to do it, otherwise I'll stop because I know I don't have the motivation to do this by myself.
I went to 2 conventions this year, Nadeshicon and Otakuthon, and Otakuthon especially made me think about attending cons as an artist in the future. I've seen people selling their art, that I consider to be under my current level, and I realized, I shouldn't be hard on myself, and actually just try. So for the future, I want to try to attend Nadeshicon and Otakuthon as an artist (as Choiyawa) and sell my old doujinshis, translated to English. I also want to do some merch, I have some good ideas, that might sell well... or fail completely, but at least they'll be original!
And that's it for this year's post.
See you next year!
